Marketing that will start a conversation!
Hi, I’m Janis. I’m not JUST Jordan’s younger sister.
I figure I've been too quiet for too long. It's time to introduce myself. I'm Janis. Nice to meet you. You'll be hearing a lot more from me here at Tell Ten Friends in the next little while. I've been busy lately. I've been interning at AdHack, a BootUpLabs company, which shares an office floor with Strutta, who Jordan works for. Secondly, I have been collaborating on a few Tell Ten Friends proje...

Dusting Off the Runners for Cancer
My sister was the one that issued the challenge. After announcing on Twitter that she and my mom had signed up for the Sun Run, the trash talk began. It didn’t take long for my brother and I to respond to the taunting, and then I upped the stakes. So presently, four members of my immediate family are prepping to run the Sun Run on May 3rd. And since I am confident that I will cross the line a...
Help Build a Web Ad Case Study
My friends from Adhack.com have just launched a new campaign called “Show us Your Balls.” The campaign is meant to draw attention to their “People Powered Ads” services for ad creators and ad buyers, ad what better way to do that than with a campaign of their own. The best part is, they’re letting everyone get involved. Here is a more detailed description of the promotion, includi...
Platform Cage Match: Tumblr vs. Soup vs. OnSugar vs. Storytlr
We’re taking a closer at several personal “life stream” platforms, in a effort to discover which offers the best options and features, based on my own set of criteria. I explained the problem that spawned this little experiment in a previous post on my personal blog, but I’ll sum it up again here briefly. As an online marketer, photographer, “micro-blogger,” and multi-media hobbyist...
What Does Beta Mean?
Please Note: This item is cross-posted from the Strutta blog (my day job). I felt that it was relevant enough to post here as well, as it documents some of the process of launching and marketing a software product, from my perspective. Last night we received a question from a Strutta user via the contact form. He asked, "When are we going to be not beta? Why is there beta anyway?" As soon as...

Web Apps I Cannot Live Without

Posted By: Jordan Behan on January 10, 2007 in Random - Comments: 13 Comments »

John of Obviousness.net tells us of his favourites, and I’ve been meaning to do this for a long time, so here’s mine:

Like John, I couldn’t get on without:

  • Gmail- Email me for an invite: jordanbehan[at]gmail.com
  • Bloglines- Although I hype Netvibes for its simplicity, I’ve been monitoring my favourite feeds in Bloglines since the beginning.
  • Wordpress- She drives this site, and many client sites as well. And we love her. Code is Poetry, after all.
  • YouTube- for the same reasons John gives. (Except the part about the kids) It’s the most widely used, and it has everything.
  • Flickr- If you don’t love Flickr, then I’m not sure you and I can get along. Just kidding. Or not.

Also, I’m rather dependent upon:

    • Basecamp- For project management, to do lists, etc.
      • Pandora- So I can rock out while I work!

What are your favorites? The ones you just can’t live without…

        1. I’m dependent on ALL the same apps as you. Not sure which one I have the biggest addiction to. Most likely Bloglines since I can get Flickr feeds in it. *grin*

        2. There is one I really love right now and it’s called Anagram. It grabs text and puts it into a Palm Database or MS Outlook. I use Palm Desktop for my to-do lists, and addresses and being able to select some text or an address, and then press one button to have it sorted and added to my Palm is fantastic. I think the website is getanagram.com.

Stay tuned for my own 2006 wrap-up along the same kinds of lines.

But listen to you with your “Code is Poetry” malarky! LOL Am I out of a job? Are you moonlighting?

        4. Jordan says:

I hear you CC! I suffer Bloglines withdrawal when I’m not connected.

Rob, “Code is Poetry,” is a Wordpress slogan (printed on t-shirts), and don’t worry, you’re the poet!

Steve, I use Basecamp for to-dos and a Moleskine day-timer to keep me organized. I don’t know why, but I’ve never been able to really embrace a handheld as part of my day-to-day. Having owned a Handspring and a Palm, and all they did was collect dust after the first few weeks of best intentions! I guess at heart I’m a paper and pen guy…Still, that little app might have been just the ticket, as it was likely the stylus and the tiny keys that scared me off.

        5. Rob says:

I would add a RSS/Feed Reader, I use FeedReader v3.07 but, thats not a ‘Web App’ and I also like
Linked in and upcomming.org, but I probably could live without them.

Thanks for the add, we will update our blog roll very shortly. :)
          Nice Photos too!

          Rob

Never underestimate the importance of rocking out! . . . although I must confess while I think Pandora is interesting I’m more of Hype Machine man than a Pandora person.

        7. Chris Thilk says:

Gmail, Newsgator, Socialtext (our corporate wiki software), Wordpress, Google Docs (which has largely replaced any Word usage unless I’m offline), YouTube…and the list goes on.

When the internet connection suffers at work or at home I find myself with literally nothing to do. All my productivity software is online and all the stuff I save to write about is saved online so, without that connection, I’m SOL.

        8. Linda says:

Oh wow Pandora, where’ve you been all my life? Thanks for sharing that.

        9. Jordan Behan says:

John, I’ll have to give Hype Machine a look. And now that you mention it, Chris- I’m on the hunt for a good wiki, so I’ll take Socialtext for a spin. I’ll be choosing one and incorporating it into the site soon for a “community project collaboration,” in the near future.

Linda, let me know the first time you start to think Pandora is reading your mind. It’s a bit creepy, if not a whole lot of fun.

        10. Masey says:

Ok, I finally pulled my finger out and posted an archived post as promised. Here tis…

        11. Ann Handley says:

One more, Jordan — StumbleUpon. The joy of the newly stumbled is unparalleled.

And Chris, I love this quote: “All my productivity software is online and all the stuff I save to write about is saved online so, without that connection, I’m SOL.” I always have one foot out on the ledge when my connection goes down… which isn’t often, thankfully. But talk about having a co-dependent relationship…. !
